FACT SHEET: Rehiring Retired Faculty
Faculty members who have retired from UBC may be rehired, either as
new hires, or as postretirement appointees under University Policy 27.
Hiring a retiree as a new hire:
You may rehire a retiree into any available position.
*
Normal advertising and recruitment guidelines apply. See the
Documentation Checklist for required forms. If the individual
retired from a tenure stream position within the last two years,
and you are rehiring them into another tenure stream position,
please contact Faculty Relations to discuss your options.
*
The title must be appropriate to duties performed, e.g., a faculty
member performing only research may be hired as a Research
Associate.
*
The retiree is effectively a new hire to the University, and will
not port any service or status from their previous appointment.
For example, a Sessional Lecturer will not regain their previously
held continuing status.
*
The retiree may be eligible for benefits that are extended to a
new hire based on their age at the time of the rehire. Offer
letters must indicate eligibility for benefits is subject to the
retiree’s pension still being held by the UBC Faculty Pension Plan
and must include the appropriate benefits enrollment code. If the
retiree belongs to the Retirement and Survivor Benefits Program,
membership may be suspended while working until age 71.
*
The retiree has the option of suspending receipt of their UBC
pension and making further contributions or continuing receipt of
their UBC pension. Interested faculty should speak to the Pensions
Administration Office.
*
If the retiree is in receipt of Canada Pension Plan benefits, he
or she should present proof of receipt to Payroll in order to
prevent deductions.
*
If the retiree has emeritus status, it will be suspended for the
period of their reemployment. The faculty member must return
their parking pass to the Parking Office.
Hiring a retiree under University Policy 27:
You may hire a retiree who used to hold a tenure stream position into
a oneyear term appointment to perform specific teaching or collection
duties, or occasionally to serve on committees.
*
Requests for postretirement appointments must be made in writing
to Faculty Relations in advance of making an offer of employment.
Requests must be accompanied with a justification.
*
Once the appointment is finalized, please submit a Faculty
Appointment Form to Faculty Relations along with evidence of prior
approval and a copy of the signed offer letter.
*
Remuneration must be commensurate with the services performed.
*
The title must accurately reflect the current status of the
individual (e.g. Professor Emeritus).
*
Pension and benefits are not available to postretirement
appointees. They may continue to access the Retirement and
Survivor Benefits Program.
*
If the retiree is in receipt of Canada Pension Plan benefits, he
or she should present proof of receipt to Payroll in order to
prevent deductions.
*
Postretirement appointees may retain their emeritus status.
