“I hold a photocopy of this assignment which I can produce if the
original is lost or damaged. To the best of my knowledge and belief,
no part of this assignment has been copied from any other student’s
work or from any other source except where due acknowledgment is made
in this text. No part of this assignment has been written form e by
any other person except where collaboration has been authorized by the
lecturer concerned.”
The ASSURE model focuses on planning the lesson in harmony with the
classroom use of media and technology.
Lesson Plan:
Name: Sezin
Surname: YÜCE
Date:
Unit: Properties of matter
Chapter: Volume of matter
Topic: Volume of solids
*
Volume measurement of geometric shaped objects
*
Volume measurement of irregular shaped objects
*
Volume measurement of dried sand
Analyze learners:
*
General Characteristics: This lesson is for the 9th grade
students. The class is 31 students, 14 girls and 17 boys. The boys
are dominating. The average age is 15. Each student in the class
lives with their parents in Turkey, in Ankara. The students’
socioeconomic life styles show variety. All the students have
different personalities, like some of them are shy, and some of
them are outgoing. However, the students are almost at the same
level of knowledge because they are taken to school by an entry
examination.
*
Entry Competencies: Last lesson, students have learned the
followings;
Matter
States of matter
Properties of matter
What is observation?
What is experiment?
Measurement,
Unit (SI unit system)
Moreover, before this lesson, the students must be able to;
Apply mathematical formula for volumes of geometric shaped objects
Make mathematical calculations,
Make unit conversion
*
Learning Styles: Each people have different intelligences. It is
better to give different activities to different students
according to their intelligence level. However, since the classes
are crowded this does not work. Although the fact is like that,
the teacher must consider the variety of intelligences and design
his/her lesson by taking this into consideration. In our schools
traditional teaching is used without thinking the students’
intelligences. Students are bored of traditional methods and they
usually like methods that they can be more social, more active and
they like handson experiences. They like methods like cooperative
learning methods and making experiments. Thus, I am planning to
make them groups of three and make them to make small experiments.
I will arrange balanced groups that each group members will work
equally. I will take materials much enough for the groups. Each
group will do the experiments and learn the volume measurements of
regular shaped, irregular shaped objects and the dried sand by the
handson experience.
State Objectives:
*
Audience: At the end of this lesson the 9th grade students,
*
Identify the prefixes used in the International System of Units,
and explain what they mean,
*
Convert units of measurement in the International System of Units
proficiently,
*
Differentiate the states of matter,
*
Differentiate the concepts ‘volume’ and ‘mass’,
*
Explain the volume concept for all states of matter
*
Design experiments
*
Define volume
*
Given enough materials, carry on experiment and investigate the
volumes of different states of matters
*
Convert the units of volume
*
Apply the formulas for the volume of a rectangular prism, cube,
sphere and volume of a cylinder
*
Explain the volume concept for states of matter
*
After conducting the experiments, draw a general conclusion about
volumes
Select, Modify, Design Instructional Methods, Media and Materials:
I decided to use the cooperative learning method. I will divide the
students into groups of three. There are three different experiments
to be conducted so three different setups. I will take enough material
with me and the students will do the experiments alternating. Since
the students like handson experiences, they will learn more by doing
and seeing.
I have a power point presentation on properties of matter which
includes volume and volume measurements. If I can provide a projector,
I am planning to use the power point presentation. But if I could not
find a projector, I would copy my presentation to acetate and use OHP.
I believe that the students can catch the concepts from the visuals if
they miss it verbally.
Since the students will make experiments to learn the volume
measurement of irregular and regular shaped objects and the volume of
the dried sand, and since the students will be 10 groups, I will
provide 10 irregular shaped objects, 10 regular shaped objects, enough
dried sand, graduated cylinders and enough water. And I will prepare a
worksheet on that the procedure is written.
Utilize Methods, Media and Materials:
*
Preview the material: Before the lesson, I will preview my power
point and the procedure worksheet and look if there is something
to change or to add. Moreover, I will preview the experimental
materials if they would be enough for my class. And I will check
if I forget something.
*
Prepare the material: I will prepare the materials like power
point, worksheet and the experimental materials before the lesson
and check if there is something missing. Moreover, I will check
the projector, OHP a day before that lesson, if they are not
present; I have to think another way.
*
Prepare the environment: I will prepare my class at the break
before my lesson hour in order to not to lose time from my lesson.
I have to be sure about the visuals are working or not. And I
would arrange the desks effective for making group work.
*
Prepare the learners: Before that lesson, in my last lesson I will
tell the students that we are going to make experiments in class.
I will state the objectives of that lesson to the students, I will
explain them how the lesson will go like and warn them for not to
be late. I am sure they will be enthusiastic about that lesson.
*
Provide the learning experience: I have planned many things but it
is important to arrange the lesson as a whole. The steps of the
lesson are as important as the details. At the beginning of the
lesson, I will state the objectives first. And then by the power
point presentation, I will briefly summarize the topic of the
previous lesson, and then today’s lesson. After giving the lecture
in short, I will arrange the groups, and distribute the experiment
procedure and experiment materials. As the students are doing the
experiments I will observe them and help if they have problems. At
the end of the lesson, after the students finish their experiments
I will create a discussion about what they observe during the
experiments. First the group members will talk in their groups,
and then a person from each group will share his/her group’s ideas
with the class.
Require learner Participation:
Since the students will mainly do group work, as a teacher I will
arrange the balanced groups of three by considering the students
personalities. To create an effective environment, I must create the
groups such that each member of the group will work. I will observe
the class while they are doing the experiments, if I see someone who
doesn’t work, I can interfere and give them work to do.
Evaluate and Revise:
*
Evaluate students’ performance: Since I will be the observer of
the class I can easily see the performances. I will monitor them
while they are conducting the experiments, and after the
experiments while they are discussing. Also, I will want them to
write a report about the experiments they have conducted. I mean
if the teacher is a good observer, the performance of the students
will easily be evaluated.
*
Evaluate media components: If the media components will take the
students attention, the media components are effective. Moreover,
if there is no problems occur during the lesson in the media
components, it means that this component will be used again.
*
Evaluate instructor performance: If the students will do the
experiments willingly, if they listen to the lecture by paying
attention, and at the end of the lesson if the groups discuss
their work and observation fully; that means the instructor’s
performance is good. However, if distractions occur during the
lesson, the teacher has to think and reconsider his/her work.
Moreover, if the lesson will goes in the pace of the teacher’s
plan, it means that the plan will be used again.
I think, the advantages of this plan are;
*
The lecturer is encouraged to effectively use methods, media and
materials.
*
The students’ abilities and backgrounds taken into consideration,
thus the lessons are more suitable for the students’ needs.
*
As every plan provides, this plan is also provide teacher to
manage the lesson time effectively.
*
Since the learner participation is important, the lessons will
occur in multidimensional interaction; I mean there are
interactions between students to teacher, teacher to students,
students to visuals, students to materials…
*
This model can be considered as student centered, thus the
students pay more attention to the lesson.
I think the disadvantages of this plan are;
*
The teacher spend more time on preparing such a plan
*
Since most of the schools in Turkey do not have enough facilities,
the costs of the materials are high.
